toru okada from the wind-up bird chronicle
I reviewed an advanced copy after emailing Tao.
I was excited to read his latest, and to judge how he has progressed as a writer and as a pseudo-celebrity author.
The book went beyond all of my expectations.
He really blew me away with his description of GHB. Such a great show.
His role as a leader in the community of outsider artists is truly inspiring and I want to ask him about his inspiration for the Paul character, who seems like such a totally wild dude.
Tao’s views on traditional marriage are very subtle and slowly reveal themselves.
The stuff about his grandparents’s role in World War Two - I mean, what can I even say that hasn’t already been said.
And then, of course, there is the Megan character. So strong. Their relationship is classic Hollywood. She is like, Audrey plus Rachel plus the chick from Mythbusters. Wow, a real feminine triumph, in terms of the way she was able to challenge him to grow as a person.
I mean, yeah. Wild sex scenes obviously. A new standard in erotic, savvy urban Internet literature. It sizzled me.
I love what he did with Brooklyn-as-charcter and how Paul was able to overcome stereotypes of Asians in America by writing that screenplay about horse raising. Seabiscuit - who knew?
And the cover - don’t talk to me about the cover.
Tao is a writer’s writer, carving a path to glory from rare way he uses words to speak truth to power.
Can you say “voice of a generation”?
